Zyrtec is an over-the-counter medication used to treat several allergy symptoms, including runny nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes. The drug is also used to treat itching due to hives. Some people take the drug year-round; others take it only during allergy season. Zyrtec comes in the forms of tablets, chewable tablets, liquid-filled capsules and syrup. Zyrtec has the active ingredient of cetirizine hydrochloride is an antihistamine approved to treat some allergy symptoms like runny nose, sneezing, Itchy or watery eyes, itchy nose or throat.

It is also approved to treat itching due to hives, which may or may not be caused by allergies. Brand-name Zyrtec is made by Pfizer Healthcare. Generic versions are made by various manufacturers. Zyrtec belongs to a group of medications known as non-sedating antihistamines, which means it is less likely to cause drowsiness, although people can still experience this side effect when taking the drug but the numbers are very less.

How to use Zyrtec Tablets

  • The medication comes in several forms, including tablets, liquid-filled capsules, chewable tablets, and syrup. It is usually taken by mouth once daily.
  • You can take Zyrtec with or without food. If the medication bothers your stomach, try taking it with food.
  • Some people need to take Zyrtec all year long, while others take it only during allergy season.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as directed on the package labeling.
  • The recommended dose of Zyrtec will be based on factors such as the severity of your symptoms. Most adults and children age six and older take 10 mg once daily. For children age two through five years old, a lower dose is recommended, and only the syrup form of Zyrtec is approved for this age group.

Zyrtec Tablets Reactions and Overdose

Theophylline can increase the level of Zyrtec in your blood, perhaps increasing your risk of Zyrtec side effects.

As with any medication, it is possible to overdose on Zyrtec (cetirizine). While symptoms will vary, based on certain factors, reported symptoms include restlessness, irritability, and drowsiness.
