Generic Name:Carbamazepine

Tegretol has been approved to treat various types of seizures, as well as pain associated with trigeminal neuralgia. The drug is believed to work by blocking sodium channels in the brain and blocking nerve signals that cause pain. Tegretol comes in tablet form and as a liquid, and is usually taken two to four times a day. Tegretol has the active ingredient of carbamazepine which is a prescription medication used to treat Epilepsy and trigeminal neuralgia medically known as tic douloureux which is, a nerve condition that causes episodes of facial pain most typically cheek or jaw pain. Tegretol is used for treating various types of seizures and trigeminal neuralgia. Although it is not exactly known how the drug works to treat seizures, it is thought that it blocks sodium channels in the brain as well as certain nerve signals that cause pain and other unpleasant sensations. Some of the other Tegretol uses include the treatment of bipolar disorder, dementia and alcohol withdrawal. Tegretol is known with another label of Tegretol XR.

How to use Tegretol Tablets

  • The medication comes in immediate-release tablets, extended-release tablets like Tegretol XR, and a suspension or liquid form. Chewable immediate-release Tegretol tablets are also available. Depending on the particular product, Tegretol is taken by mouth two to four times daily.
  • Tegretol can be taken with or without food. If the medication upsets your stomach, try taking it with food.
  • Make sure to shake the Tegretol suspension thoroughly just before each dose. Do not mix the suspension with food or other liquids (including other medications).
  • Do not crush, chew, or break the long-acting form of Tegretol. Inspect each Tegretol XR tablet to make sure it is not chipped or damaged. Make sure each tablet has a tiny hole in it (this is how the medication is released). You may notice the Tegretol XR shell in your stool; this is normal and should not cause any problems.

Cautions before Use Tegretol Tablets

  • Tegretol, may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior.
  • Tegretol can cause very serious cases of anemia or other low blood counts, which may put you at risk for bleeding or serious infections.
  • Tegretol can cause very dangerous skin reactions known as Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) or toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN).
  • This medication can make agitation, confusion, or psychosis worse.
  • Tegretol can make seizures worse in people with absence seizures or petit mal seizures.
  • Tegretol can cause a decrease in thyroid function.
  • People suffering from liver or kidney diseases are suggested to not to take this medication.

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Unsteadiness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Worsening of seizures
  • Hallucinations
  • Depression
  • Suicidal thoughts or behaviors
  • Anemia or other blood disorders
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Increased infections

Interactions and Overdose of Tegretol Tablets

Some of the medications that can lead to Tegretol drug interactions include birth control pills, antidepressants, and certain antibiotics. These interactions can alter the levels of some medications in your blood and make them less effective, or may increase your risk of side effects.

Symptoms can include unusual body movements, a rapid heart rate, and vomiting and these symptoms should be taken under medical support.
