Vincasar PFS

Generic Name:Vincristine

Vincasar is a prescribed medication used for the treatment of cancer patients. It reduces the growth of cancer cells in the body.  It has the active ingredient of Vincristine sulphate which is an anticancer or cytotoxic medicine. Vincristine belongs to a group of anticancer medicines called vinca alkaloids. Alkaloids prevent the formation of chromosome (threadlike structure in cells that carries genetic information) spindles necessary for cell duplication at the dividing stage (mitosis) in its life cycle. This medicine is used to treat leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, rhabdomyosarcoma known as soft tissue tumors, neuroblastoma or a cancer that forms in nerve tissue, and Wilms' tumor. Vincasar PFS is sold under the generic name of Vincristine also. Vincasar PFS is used principally in combination with other anticancer medicines. It is administered by intravenous injection only.

How to Use

  • Vincasar PFS is given as an injection through a needle placed into a vein. You will receive this injection in a clinic or hospital setting. The medicine must be given slowly through an IV infusion.
  • VInasar PFS is usually given once per week. Follow your doctor’s instructions.
  • You may feel burning, pain, or swelling around the IV needle when the medicine is injected. If it happens then you must inform your doctor.
  • People taking this medicine should have regular blood tests to check the levels of their blood components.
  • Injection of this medicine into the spinal cord or intrathecal injection is likely to be fatal. This medicine is for intravenous use only.

Cautions before Usage

  • This medicine is vesicant, means it can cause severe local reactions such as blistering, ulceration and death to skin and tissue should it leak out of the vein (extravasation). Great precaution must be taken to avoid extravasation when administering this medicine.
  • Special precautions must be taken while using Vincasar PFS as it is a drug which is categorized under cytotoxic medicines, in order to prevent self-contamination.
  • People suffering from liver diseases should not use Vincasar PFS or any other form of Vincristine.
  • Those who have a nerve-muscle disorder such as myasthenia gravis, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), multiple sclerosis), or muscular dystrophy are suggested to not to use this medication.
  • People with a medical history of coronary artery disease cannot use this medication.
  • This medicine could be dangerous for pregnant women as it could harm the unborn child.

Possible Side Effects

The side effects which may arise due to the usage of Vincasar PFS are as follows:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty in passing urine or urinary retention
  • "Pins and needles" sensation in hands and feet known as peripheral neuritis    
  • Loss of appetite
  • Damage to the nerves
  • Reversible hair loss
  • Jaw pain
  • Paralysis or inactivity of the intestine that stops the movement of material through the gut
  • Pain

Interactions and Overdose Symptoms

Vincasar PFS may react with antifungal medication such as clotrimazole, heart or blood pressure medication such as diltiazem, conivapta, diclofenac, HIV/AIDS medicine such as atazanavir and other cancer medications.

Overdose symptoms of Vinacasar PFS may include extreme thirst with headache, nausea, vomiting, and weakness and any patient having these symptoms should contact their doctor immediately.
