Generic Name: Zoledronic Acid

Zoledronic Acid is a medication that is used for treating high blood calcium levels due to cancer and preventing broken bones due to multiple myeloma or solid tumor cancers that have spread to the bone. The drug, which is available by prescription, is administered through an IV by a healthcare provider.

This medication is used to treat high blood calcium levels (hypercalcemia) that may occur with cancer. Zoledronic acid which is used with cancer chemotherapy to treat bone problems that may occur with multiple myeloma and other types of cancer such as breast, lung that have spread to the bones. Zoledronic acid belongs to a class of drugs known as bisphosphonates. It lowers high blood calcium levels by reducing the amount of calcium released from your bones into your blood. It also works by slowing the breakdown of your bones by cancer to prevent bone fractures.

How to Use Zoledronic acid Injections

  • The medication comes in injection form. It is given by IV by your healthcare provider, usually at a hospital or cancer clinic or center.
  • It is important that you get enough calcium and vitamin D while taking Zoledronic Acid
  • It does not matter if you take Zoledronic Acid on an empty or full stomach.
  • It is very important that you are well hydrated before receiving your Zoledronic Acid dose in order to protect your kidneys. Make sure to drink enough fluids in the days before your Zoledronic Acid dose.

Cautions before Use Zoledronic acid Injections

  • Zoledronic Acid can cause kidney damage. Your healthcare provider should monitor your kidney function closely, using a simple blood test before each Zoledronic Acid dosage.
  • Studies have found that Zoledronic Acid have caused a condition called osteonecrosis of the jaw. This is a serious, possibly disfiguring problem in which the bone of the jaw dies. Symptoms such as pain, infection, or loosening of the teeth may occur with this problem.
  • Zoledronic Acid can cause low blood calcium, phosphate, and magnesium.
  • Zoledronic Acid can cause extreme muscle or bone pain.
  • Zoledronic Acid is considered a dangerous medication to be used during pregnancy.

Zoledronic acid Injections Side effects

The side effects which may arise due to the usage of Zoledronic Acid are as follows:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Weight loss
  • Back pain
  • Unusual sensations, such as tingling or burning
  • Arm or leg pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bladder infection
  • Hair loss
  • Yeast infection
  • Chills
  • Low blood pressure
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Mouth sores
  • Sore throat

Zoledronic acid Injections Interactions and Overdose

When diuretics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, vancomycin, or aminoglycoside antibiotics are taken in conjunction with Zoledronic Acid, drug interactions may potentially occur. These Zoledronic Acid interactions could increase your risk of low blood calcium and kidney damage, so be sure to talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications with Zoledronic Acid

Zoledronic Acid overdose symptoms may include fever, unusual sensations, and kidney damage. It is also possible to develop low blood calcium, low blood magnesium, or low blood phosphate. Overdose treatment should include immediate medical support.
