Orabase mouth cream or ointment is a prescribed medication used for the treatment of mouth ulcers and other dental ailments. This medication is used for the temporary relief of symptoms from mouth sores due to injury. This drug comes in a dental paste that allows it to stick to the inside of the mouth, cheeks and gums. It works by reducing the swelling, itching, and pain that can occur with mouth sores. This medication is known as a medium-strength corticosteroid.

Orabase Ointment has the active ingredient of Triamcinolone Acetonide offers temporary relief for mouth ulcers or other inflammatory and ulcerative lesions gained after a trauma to the mouth. Orabase Ointment is often prescribed to patients who have lupus who tend to suffer from many mouth ulcers due to their condition. Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any of its components should not use this product. Those people who suffer from Tuberculosis and viral lesions, including herpes simplex, vaccina and varicella.

How to Use Orabase Cream

Do not apply this medication in the eyes or on the skin. It is to be used only inside the mouth. Dab or press a small amount of paste onto the area to be treated until the paste sticks and a smooth, slippery film develops. A cotton swab may be used to apply the paste. Do not attempt to spread or rub the paste in. This will only cause it to become crumbly, grainy, or gritty. Apply to the affected area 2 to 3 times daily after meals or at bedtime as directed by your doctor or dentist. The treated area should not be bandaged or otherwise covered or wrapped unless your doctor or dentist directs you to do so. Mouth infections may worsen while you are using this medication.

Cautions before Use Orabase Cream

There are some cautions, which are to be followed during the usage of Orabase mouth cream:

Before using Orabase mouth cream, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other steroids hydrocortisone or if you have any other allergies.

Children and those who have used this drug for an extended time may be at higher risk, especially if they also have medical problems such as serious infections, injuries, or surgeries.

Before using this medicine, consult your doctor, dentist, or pharmacist if you have herpes-type infection, other infections or sores of the mouth or throat.

Orabase Cream Possible Side Effects

The side effects, which may occur due to use of Orabase, are as follows:

  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Peeling of skin
  • Headache
  • Blistering
  • Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may like rashes, itching/swelling especially of the face, tongue, and throat.
  • Severe Dizziness
  • Trouble in Breathing

Orabase Cream Reactions and Overdose

Before using this medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist about all prescribed medicine and nonprescribed or herbal products especially oral corticosteroids such as, prednisone, which you are using as it may cause reactions with them.

Orabase mouth cream may be harmful if swallowed. If overdose or swallowing is suspected the patient should be taken to the medical center immediately.
