Atarax is a prescribed drug used for the treatment of allergies. Atarax is an antihistamine with anti- cholinergic, which has drying and sedative properties that is used to treat allergic reactions. The body releases histamine during several types of allergic reactions during some viral infections, such as the common cold. Atarax is used for the relief of itching caused by various allergic conditions. Atarax is also used for treating anxiety and tension, and inducing sedation prior to or after anesthesia. Atarax is used for the short-term treatment of nervousness and tension that may occur with certain mood disorders for e.g., anxiety and dementia. It may also be used to help you feel calmer before or after surgery, or to help certain narcotic pain relievers work better. Atarax is prescribed for the treatment of anxiety, allergic conjunctivitis, and inflammation of the nose due to an Allergy. Atarax is used in Stuffy Nose, and runny Nose, irritation of skin caused by an Allergy, Itching, and Welt from Pressure on Skin, Hives, and Sneezing. Its other effects are calming; pain relief may work by affecting other natural substances or by acting directly on certain parts of the brain.

How to use

Take this medication by mouth as needed, usually three or four times daily or as directed by your doctor. If you are taking the syrup, measure the dose carefully using a special medication spoon or a kitchen-measuring spoon. Dosage is based on your age, medical condition, and response to therapy. In children, dosage may also be based on body weight. Take this medication as directed. Do not take more medication or take it more often than prescribed.

Cautions before using

This product may contain inactive ingredients called hydroxyzine , which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. The cautions are as follows:

  • People with medical history, especially of breathing problems like emphysema, and asthma should avoid it.
  • People having a certain eye problem like glaucoma
  • Heart Problems
  • Hypertension or high blood pressure
  • Kidney problems
  • Liver problems
  • Intestine problems
  • Seizures

Atarax may make you dizzy or drowsy or cause blurred vision. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness or clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. It is also advised not to alcohol with this medication.

Atarax Side Effects

There are some side effects, which have been found with Atarax, but many people using this medication do not have serious side effects and if have any they are as follows:

  • Seizures
  • Mental or mood changes
  • worsening anxiety
  • confusion
  • hallucinations
  • vision changes
  • painful urination
  • irregular heart beat
  • severe drowsiness
  • swelling throat, lips or face

Atarax Reactions and Overdose

If you are taking drugs that cause drowsiness such like certain antihistamines, anti-seizure drugs, medicine for sleep or anxiety like alprazolam, diazepam and zolpidem, muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers and psychiatric medicines. Atarax may react with anti depressants, MAO inhibitors, etc.

Overdose effects may include severe or prolonged drowsiness, nausea, vomiting feeling like dying.
