Zyban
Generic Name: Bupropion
Zyban may be prescribed to help treat depression. When certain chemicals in the brain become unbalanced, it can cause a variety of conditions, including depression. Zyban works by blocking the reuptake of these chemicals. The medication comes in tablet form and is taken two to four times a day. Zyban has the active ingredient bupropion hydrochloride which is a prescribed medicine used to treat depression which is also known as major depression or clinical depression. Zyban is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. Generic versions are made by several manufacturers. The medication works by helping to keep certain chemicals in the brain balanced. There are currently several off-label Zyban uses, such as treating ADHD, treating seasonal affective disorder, and helping people quit smoking. Zyban is not approved for use in children with depression. Zyban is also available with a different dosage details as a Zyban Advantage Pack.
How to use Zyban Tablet
- The medication comes in tablet form. It is taken by mouth, usually two to four times per day.
- Taking Zyban at bedtime may cause insomnia. If you are having trouble sleeping, try taking your last dose a little earlier.
- You can take Zyban with or without food. If the medication bothers your stomach, try taking it with food.
- Your Zyban dosages should be taken at the same times each day to maintain an even level in your blood.
- For people with liver problems such as liver failure or cirrhosis, the maximum dosing is Zyban 75 mg, taken once daily.
Cautions before Use Zyban Tablet
- Zyban may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior in children, teenagers, and adults.
- Zyban may cause symptoms of anxiety, hostility, agitation, panic, restlessness, hallucinations, extreme hyperactivity, and suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
- Zyban should not be used right after a heart attack. Also, there is some evidence that Zyban can cause irregular heart rhythms.
- Zyban can cause insomnia, agitation, hallucinations, confusion, and other mental problems, especially in people just starting the medicine.
- Zyban can cause weight loss.
- Zyban can cause allergic reactions. Tell your healthcare provider if you have signs of an allergic reaction — including an unexplained skin rash, itching, hives, trouble breathing, or unexplained swelling while taking Zyban.
Zyban Tablet Side effects
The side effects which may occur due to the usage of Zyban are as follows:
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
- Headaches
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dizziness
- Increased sweating
- Shakiness
- Insomnia
- Appetite loss
- Blurred vision
- A rapid heart rate (tachycardia)
- Confusion
- Hostility
- Irregular heart rhythms
- Hearing changes
Zyban Tablet Interactions and Overdose
Some of the drugs that can potentially interact with Zyban include alcohol, antipsychotic medications, and beta blockers. Zyban drug interactions can cause your body to metabolize the medications differently than intended and alter the levels of some drugs in your blood, among other things.
As with any medication, it is possible to overdose on Zyban. Some common effects of a Zyban overdose include seizures, hallucinations, and irregular heart rhythms. The effects of a Zyban overdose can vary depending on several factors, such as how much of the medication was taken and whether it was taken with any other medicines, alcohol, and/or drugs. Treatment options for a recent overdose can include pumping the stomach or administering certain medications.
