Telzir is a prescription HIV and AIDS medication that is only approved for use in combination with other drugs as part of an HIV "cocktail." It works by preventing the HIV virus from multiplying and spreading to uninfected cells in the body. The medicine comes in tablet and liquid form, and is generally taken twice daily.

Telzir has the active ingredient of fosamprenavir calcium which is a prescription medicine used as a treatment for HIV and AIDS. It is only approved to be used in combination with other HIV medications. Telzir is used for treating HIV and AIDS in adults and children. It is often used with other drugs as part of an HIV "cocktail." While Telzir uses are primarily focused on the treatment of HIV, the medication can also be used to prevent infection in people exposed to the virus such, healthcare workers who come in contact with contaminated needle sticks or from any kind of unprotected sex practice.

How to Use Telzir Tablets

  • The medication comes in tablet and oral suspension (liquid) form. It is usually taken by mouth once or twice a day.
  • You can take Telzir tablets with or without food. However, adults should take Telzir suspension without food, while children should take Telzir suspension with food.
  • If you vomit within 30 minutes of taking Telzir, you should take another dose, as you probably vomited up the medicine.
  • Be sure to shake Telzir suspension well before each dose.
  • Try to take Telzir at the same time every day to maintain an even level in your blood.

Cautions before Use Telzir Tablets

  • The medication can destroy red blood cells which are medically known as hemolytic anemia.
  • Telzir is a sulfonamide or “sulfa” drug. Do not take this medication if you have a sulfa allergy.
  • Telzir frequently causes skin rashes.
  • if you have liver disease, Telzir may make it worse.
  • Telzir can increase triglyceride or cholesterol levels.
  • The medication can change the distribution of fat on your body.
  • Telzir is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. If you have HIV or AIDS, you should always use proper contraception while sex practices.

Telzir Tablets Side Effects

The side effects which may arise due to the usage of Telzir are as follows:

  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
  • Unusual or unexplained bleeding
  • A kidney stone
  • Changes in the distribution of fat on your body such as a buffalo hump
  • Signs of an allergic reaction

Interactions and Overdose of Telzir Tablets

Rifampin, pimozide, and ergot medications should never be taken with Telzir. Drug interactions may occur when these medications are combined that could reduce the effectiveness of the drugs or lead to life-threatening side effects. Some of the other medications that may cause negative Telzir drug interactions include delavirdine, efavirenz, tricyclic antidepressants, and hormonal contraceptives.

Telzir, overdose symptoms included increased liver enzymes, which could be a sign of liver damage. After discontinuing the drug, however, the liver enzyme levels went back to normal. Treatment for a Telzir overdose may include proper medical support.
