Generic Name:Tenofovir

Tenofovir is a prescribed medication which is used with other medications to help control your HIV infection, thereby improving your quality of life. It helps to decrease the amount of HIV in your body so your immune system can work better. It also lowers your risk of getting HIV disease complications (such as new infections, cancer). Tenofovir belongs to a class of drugs known as nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).Tenofovir is not a cure for HIV and it does not prevent the spread of HIV to others through sexual contact or blood contamination which may happen by unsafe needles and unprotected sex practices. Tenofovir is also used to treat a certain type of liver infection called chronic hepatitis B infection. It helps to decrease the amount of hepatitis B virus in your body by interfering with virus growth. Tenofovir may also be used with other medications to prevent HIV infection after contact with the virus.

How to Use Tenofovir Tablets

  • Take this medication by mouth with or without food, usually once daily or as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition, kidney function, and response to treatment.
  • If you are taking HIV medications for the first time, you may experience symptoms of an old infection as your immune system begins to work better.
  • Do not skip any doses. Do not increase your dose.

Cautions before Use Tenofovir Tablets

  • People suffering from kidney problems, liver problems such as hepatitis C, or cirrhosis are advised to not to take his medication.
  • Those patients who have bone problems such as bone disease, bone loss/osteoporosis, weak or broken bones are advised to not to take this medication.
  • People who are suffering from disease of the pancreas such as pancreatitis are suggested to avoid this medication.

Tenofovir Tablets Side Effects

The side effects which may arise due to the usage of Tenofovir are as follows:

  • Fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms
  • Liver Damage
  • Kidney Problems
  • Signs of Infection
  • Sleep problems or insomnia,
  • Strange dreams;
  • Depression,
  • Headache,
  • Dizziness;
  • diarrhea, bloating, gas
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • skin rash; or
  • changes in the shape or location of body fat especially in your arms, legs, face, neck, breasts, and trunk

Interactions and Overdose of Tenofovir Tablets

Tenofovir may interact with acyclovir, adefovir, cidofovir, ganciclovir, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen/naproxen).Do not take this medication with other products that contain tenofovir.Some other drugs to treat HIV infection (including atazanavir, didanosine, lopinavir/ritonavir) may also interact with tenofovir.

In case of any over dosage people should seek immediate medical support.
