AndroGel is a prescription steroid used for treating low testosterone levels in men. This medication contains testosterone in a special gel that is applied to the skin just once a day. Over a 24-hour period, AndroGel can increase testosterone levels back to normal. AndroGel has the generic name of testosterone topical.

This medicine is considered as a controlled substance which means there are special rules and regulations are present to follow its sales. AndroGel is used to treat low testosterone levels in men. Because it does not rely on the testes or the brain to increase testosterone levels, this prescription medication can treat low testosterone that is caused by several factors. Occasionally, doctors and medical practitioners may recommend some other uses, such as the treatment of low testosterone levels in women and for slightly low testosterone levels in men.

How to Use Androgel

  • The medication is a gel that is applied to the skin once daily. It comes in either single-use packets or in a multiuse pump.
  • Apply AndroGel at the same time each day, preferably in the morning. Apply it to clean, dry, healthy skin on the shoulders, upper arms, and abdomen
  • Do not apply AndroGel to the genitals.
  • Make sure to wash your hands after applying the gel. Give the gel a few minutes to dry before you dress. Make sure to wait at least five or six hours before showering or swimming.
  • Be sure to cover the application site with clothing once the gel is dry to minimize contact with women or children. You should wash the area thoroughly before any skin-to-skin contact such as sexual intercourse.
  • Until the gel dries, it is flammable. Stay away from open flame until the gel is dry.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed.

Cautions before Use Androgel

  • AndroGel can cause or worsen an enlarged prostate. It also appears to increase the risk of prostate cancer.
  • This medication is not approved for use in women. It has not been satisfactorily studied in women and can cause virilization the condition where the development of male characteristics, such as a deep voice or body hair may arise in women.
  • Any women or children should not come into direct or indirect contact with AndroGel as it may cause severe reactions.
  • AndroGel can potentially decrease sperm count, thereby decreasing fertility and could be a dangerous medicine to be used while pregnancy.
  • Androgens can cause fluid retention, which can be dangerous for people with liver, heart, or kidney disease.

Androgel Side Effects

The side effects which may arise due to the usage of AndroGel are as follows:

  • General weakness
  • Emotional instability
  • Breast development or pain
  • High blood pressure
  • Decreased libido (sex drive)
  • Nervousness
  • Testes problems, such as a varicocele or swollen veins in the scrotum
  • Dry skin
  • Anemia

  • Urinary Symptoms

Androgel Interactions and Overdose

If certain medications, such as insulin or corticosteroids, are taken with AndroGel, drug interactions may occur. Some of these interactions can increase your risk of potentially dangerous side effects, such as low blood sugar levels, fluid retention, dangerous bleeding, or liver damage.

The overdose effects of AndroGel may cause strokes, high blood pressure, anemia and headaches. If these symptoms persist the patient should go under proper medical care.
