Elocon skin cream is a medication used for the treatment for those people who are suffering from various skin problems. Elocon is a steroid and has mometasone furoate as the active ingredient in it, thatis prescribed to treat various skin conditions, such as dermatitis, psoriasis, and eczema. It works by reducing inflammation and suppressing an overactive immune system. This medicine comes in the form of an ointment, a lotion, or a cream, and usually applied to the affected areas of the skin once daily.

It belongs to a group of medications known as topical steroids and is used to treat inflammation and itching due to a wide variety of skin conditions, Brand-name Elocon is made by Schering-Plough. Generic versions are made by various manufacturers.

How to use

  • This medication is usually applied to the affected area once a day.
  • Apply the medication cautiously only a thin film is necessary to cover the affected area.
  • If your healthcare provider recommends that you do so, you may apply a dressing over the medicine. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for a recommendation for which type of dressing to use.
  • Do not use this product on the face, underarm, groin, or diaper area unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as prescribed.

Cautions before Using

There are some cautions, which are to be followed before taking Elocon:

  • If you are using Elocon for an extended period, it may lead to Cushing’s syndrome known as a group of symptoms caused by prolonged exposure to steroids.
  • Elocon can suppress the body’s ability to make natural steroids. This typically happens when large doses are used over a long period. In such circumstances, Elocon should be stopped gradually, to give your body a chance to begin making its own natural steroids again. If this is not feasible, you might need to take an oral steroid for a while after which you will slowly be withdraw the oral steroid.
  • Elocon is a steroid and can cause serious side effects, such as Cushing’s syndrome or diabetes. Although this is more likely to occur with oral or injectable steroids, it is still possible with topical steroids, including Elocon. The more you apply and the longer you use the drug, the more likely these problems are to occur.
  • Elocon should be avoided by the pregnant women and breast feeding mothers.

Reactions and Overdose

Taking these drugs in combination with Elocon can cause negative interactions and could decrease the effectiveness of these drugs. To help minimize any complications, make sure your healthcare provider is aware of any other medicine, vitamin supplements, or herbal supplement you are taking.

Overdose symptoms such as a rounded face, unusual body fat distribution, and high blood sugar levels may occur.
