Nizoral is used to treat skin infections such as athlete's foot, itch, ringworm, and certain kinds of dandruff. This medication is also used to treat a skin condition known as pityriasis tinea versicolor a fungal infection that causes a lightening or darkening of the skin of the neck, chest, arms, or legs. The active ingredient of Nizoral is Ketoconazole, which is an azoles antifungal that works by preventing the growth of fungus. Nizoral Tablets belongs to a class of drugs known as the imidazoles. It is used in the treatment of fungal infections by interfering with their growth and repair mechanisms. Ketoconazole inhibits the production of a chemical called ergosterol, which is a component of the fungal cell wall. Damage to this wall cannot be repaired and this interferes with the cell's ability to reproduce. Nizoral Tablets is used in the treatment of a number of different types of serious fungal infections, including those of the gut, skin and nails. It is found in the form of shampoo.
