Generic Name:Tazarotene

Tazarotene skin cream or gel is used in the treatment of stable plaque psoriasis covering up to 20% of body surface area and in the treatment of mild to moderately severe facial acne. This medication is used to treat psoriasis or acne. It is a retinoid product which is a form of Vitamin A. It works by affecting the growth of skin cells. If you have considerable sun exposure due to occupation, particular caution as described above should be exercised when using Tazarotene Gel. Tazarotene Cream and Gel are unique because they are prod rugs. A prod rug is a medication supplied in a chemically inactive form and becomes active only after it enters the body. In the case of Tazarotene the active ingredient of Tazarotene becomes effective medicine Tazarotenic acid once it passes through the skin. No other retinoid behaves the same way. Tazarotene is clinically shown to have effective acne-fighting power.

How to Use Tazarotene Skin Cream

  • Use this medication on the skin only. If you are treating acne, clean and thoroughly dry the area to be treated. If you are treating psoriasis, make sure the skin is dry before applying the medication.
  • Apply a thin layer of this medication to the affected skin, usually once a day in the evening or as directed by your doctor. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Do not apply the medication in the eyes, eyelids, or mouth, or inside the vagina. If you do get the medication in those areas, flush with plenty of water.
  • Do not wrap, cover, or bandage the area. Do not apply this medication to normal, healthy skin. Also, do not apply this medication to skin that is cut, scraped, sunburned, or affected by eczema.
  • After applying the medication, wash your hands unless you are using this medication to treat the hands. If you are using this medication on your hands, do not touch your eyes with your hands. If you are also using a moisturizing cream/lotion, apply it at least 1 hour before applying this medication. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it.

Cautions before Use Tazarotene Skin Cream

  • Do not apply this medication to skin that is cut, scraped, sunburned, or affected by eczema.
  • People with a medical history of skin conditions like eczema, sunburn and sun sensitivity should avoid
  • Weather extremes, such as wind or cold, may be more irritating to your skin while you are using Tazarotene
  • Tazarotene should be used with caution if you are also using other topical agents with a strong skin drying effect, products with high concentrations of alcohol, astringents, spices, the peel of lime, medicated soaps or shampoos, permanent wave solutions, electrolysis, hair depilatories or waxes, or other preparations or processes that might dry or irritate the skin.

Tazarotene Skin Cream Side Effects

The side effects, which may occur with the use of Tazarotene, are as follows:

  • Severe dizziness
  • Trouble in breathing
  • Allergic rash
  • Swelling on face, mouth and lips

  • Burning or stinging
  • Scaling, dry skin, or pain at the affected area

Interactions and Overdose of Tazarotene Skin Cream

Drug interactions may be avoided if you inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are using, including nonprescription medicines. It may react with vitamin A products, hair perming solutions, other skin products with strong drying effects, skin products containing alcohol like shaving lotions, astringents such as calamine lotion, perfume soaps, shampoos, cleansers that are medicated.

Dangerous overdose affects may rise if swallowed, if this happens the patient must seek medical care.
