Cortef is an anti inflammatory drug to treat Infection caused by the Trichinae Parasite, Sarcoidosis, Diagnostic Test For Cushing's Syndrome, Chronic Malignant T-Cell Lymphoma of the Skin, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Type of Leukemia - Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, Increased Calcium in the Blood from Cancer, Thyroid Gland Inflammation, Condition caused by Excess Secretion of Male Hormones . It has the active ingredient of Hydrocortisone which is a natural corticosteroid produced by the adrenal glands located adjacent to the kidneys. Corticosteroids have potent anti-inflammatory properties, and used in a wide variety of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, colitis, asthma, bronchitis, certain skin rashes, and allergic or inflammatory conditions of the nose and eyes. There are numerous preparations of corticosteroids including oral tablets, capsules, liquids, topical creams and gels, inhalers and eye drops, and injects able and intravenous solutions. Hydrocortisone that is prescribed in oral tablet and liquid forms may be used in several other ailments. Other miscellaneous conditions treated with this medication include thyroiditis and sarcoidosis. Finally, Cortef is used as a hormone replacement in patients whose adrenal glands are unable to produce sufficient amounts of corticosteroids.

How to Use

Dosage requirements of Cortef may vary among individuals and the diseases being treated. In general, the lowest possible effective dose is used. Corticosteroids given in multiple doses throughout the day are more effective, but also more toxic, than if the same total dose is given once daily, or every other day. It should be taken orally as per the dosage recommended by the physician. It is also suggested that should be taken with food.

Cautions before using

  • Patients on prolonged treatment with hydrocortisone and other corticosteroids can develop osteoporosis and an increased risk of bone fractures, so theses patients should avoid the usage of Cortef as impairs calcium absorption and new bone formation.
  • Cortef can appear in breast milk, and can have adverse effects on the baby. Therefore, mothers taking hydrocortisone should discontinue nursing.
  • Peron who are having chicken pox and measles viruses can produce serious and even fatal illnesses in patients on high doses of Cortef.
  • Children under age of 12 should avoid using Cortef.
  • People with age the of 60 or more can have risk of diabetes, fluid retention, hypertension, osteoporosis
  • Women who are pregnant should not use Cortef as it may harm the unborn baby.

Cortef Side Effects

The side effects of Cortef depend on the dose, the duration and the frequency of administration. Short courses of Cortef are usually well tolerated with few and mild side effects. Long term, high doses of Cortef will usually produce predictable and potentially serious side effects.

  • Weight gain
  • High blood pressure
  • Potassium loss
  • Headache
  • Muscle weakness
  • Puffiness and hair growth on the face
  • Thinning and easy bruising of the skin
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Peptic ulceration
  • Worsening of diabetes
  • Irregular menses
  • Growth retardation in children
  • Convulsions
  • Psychic disturbances

Reactions and Overdose

Cortef can interact with tuberculosis and malaria vaccines, thus people who are taking this medication should be aware before usage. It may also react with the adrenal glands if used for a longer time.

Overdose effects may occur as vomiting, dizziness, nausea etc.
