Generic Name:Ferrous Fumarate, Folic acid, and Iron Polysaccharide

Tandem is a prescribed medication mostly used for the treatment of anemia. It is especially used among women patients who are suffering from post-pregnancy problems and loss of blood. This medication is a multivitamin and iron product used to treat or prevent vitamin deficiency due to poor diet, certain illnesses, or during pregnancy. Vitamins and iron are important building blocks of the body and help keep you in good health. It has the active ingredient of three elements i.e. Ferrous Fumarate, Folic acid, and Iron Polysaccharide. This medication contains two different types of iron. Folic acid helps your body produce and maintain new cells, and also helps prevent changes to DNA that may lead to cancer. Tandem increases the red blood cells which are responsible to increase blood or hemoglobin in the body and Hemoglobin carries oxygen through your blood to tissues and organs. This medicine is not suitable in children younger than 6 years because accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning. Tandem is also available in another brand name of Tandem F.

How to Use Tandem Tablets

  • Take this medication by mouth, usually once daily or as directed. Follow all directions on the product package, or take as directed by your doctor. Do not take more than the recommended dosage
  • This medication is best taken on an empty stomach 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Take with a full glass of water.
  • If stomach upset occurs, you may take this medication with food. Avoid taking antacids, dairy products, tea, or coffee within 2 hours before or after this medication because they may decrease its effectiveness. Do not lie down for 10 minutes after taking this medication.
  • If you are taking the delayed-release form or extended-release capsules, swallow them whole. Do not crush or chew delayed-release or extended-release products.

Cautions before Use Tandem Tablets

  • If you have iron overload disorder such as hemochromatosis or hemosiderosis then you may not get to use this medicine.
  • If you have allergies with soya products then you should not us this medication.
  • People who have stomach or intestinal problems such as ulcer, colitis are suggested to not to take this medication.
  • People who are suffering from liver problems are suggested to not to take this medication.
  • As Tandem contains folic acid, be sure to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have vitamin B12 deficiency such as pernicious anemia before taking it. Folic acid may affect certain laboratory tests for vitamin B12 deficiency without treating this anemia. Untreated vitamin B12 deficiency may result in serious nerve problems such as peripheral neuropathy.

Tandem Tablets Side Effects

The side effects which may arise due to the usage of Tandem are as follows:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea;
  • Heartburn
  • Constipation
  • Black-colored stools
  • Mild nausea or vomiting

Interactions and Overdose of Tandem Tablets

Tandem can react with chloramphenicol, methyldopa, other vitamin/nutritional supplements, bisphosphonates such as alendronate, levodopa, penicillamine, quinolone antibiotics such as, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, thyroid medications such as, levothyroxine, and tetracycline antibiotics like doxycycline, minocycline, hydantoins such as phenytoin.

Overdose symptoms of Tandem may include nausea, vomiting, shallow breathing, weak pulse, pale skin, blue lips, extreme weakness, fainting, or death. Do contact your doctor immediately in case of any adverse effects.
